| Carlo Camillo DeRudio was born in Belluno, Italy on August 26, 1832. He was in command of Company A in the valley and hilltop fights at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was educated at the Austrian Military Academy in Milan and served on the staff of General Garibaldi in Italy. DeRudio departed from London for New York on February 8, 1864, and entered military service as a Private, 79th, Highlanders, New York Volunteers in which he served from August 25 to October 17, 1867. Private DeRudio was later commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Company D, 2nd U.S. colored Infantry on October 17 to date from November 11, and was honorably mustered out with the regiment on January 5, 1866. He was then appointed a Second Lieutenant on August 31, 1867. During the reorganization of the army in 1869, DeRudio was |
| unassigned. He was later assigned however to the 7th Cavalry on July 14 of that year and promoted to First Lieutenant on December 15, 1875, to occupy the vacancy created by the promotion of First Lieutenant Thomas McDougall. On May 17, 1876, he departed from Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory, with Company E to participate in the Sioux Expedition. During the Little Big Horn river fight he was on duty with Company A and was engaged in the valley fight. In the ensuing retreat to the hilltop, he was missing but rejoined the command on the bluffs on the night of June 26. DeRudio was promoted to Captain on December 17, 1882, and accepted the promotion on January 31, 1883. From May 2nd to August 26, 1896, he was in San Diego waiting retirement and on that day he was retired by law at the age of 64. He received promotion to Major on June 3, 1909. DeRudio died November 1, 1910 in Los Angeles, California. |
